Anal tightening is a narrowing of the anal canal, which may be either congenital or inherited, commonly due to chronic inflammation and resulting scar development. There are a number of etiologies that can contribute to the development of acquired anal tightening: hemorrhoidectomy (postoperative complication), laxative misuse, radiation treatment, tuberculosis, and inflammatory bowel disease. Patients of anal tightening will have constipation and defecation pain. They may also have intestinal distention, rectal leakage, watery rectal discharge from the passage of loose material near the fecal impaction, and tenesmus.
