Sentinel piles (also known as sentinel skin tags) can get better without care, but you may need to have them removed by surgery if they are big or causing you problems. Explanation Anal skin tags, or rectal skin tags, are common and typically innocuous growths that hang the skin across the outside of the anus. They may be mistaken for warts or masses (hemorrhoids). Anal skin tags can also be called hypertrophic papillae or fibroepithelial polyps. They are not infectious but can be due to infection, lesion, anal damage, or skin left behind after hemorrhoid care. While anal skin tags do not pose a health danger, they can cause problems in preserving cleanliness after use of the toilet. Skin tags can also collect moisture and cause discomfort. They can often become annoyed by interaction with clothes or by the activity associated with sitting.
