The anal fistula is a persistent pathological contact between the anal canal's epithelialized surface and the perianal skin. With its inner opening in the anal canal and its outer opening in the skin near the anus, an anal fistula can be defined as a narrow tube. Anal fistulae are frequently observed in persons with a history of anal abscesses. When anal abscesses do not adequately heal, they may form. Anal fistulae derive from the anal glands that are situated in the anal canal between the inner and outer anal sphincter and discharge into it. An abscess will develop if the outlet of these glands is blocked, and will ultimately spread to the surface of the skin. A fistula is a tract where this mechanism creates.
