Haemorrhoid’s, also known as piles, are swollen veins in the anus and lower rectum, close to varicose veins. Haemorrhoids may form within the rectum (internal haemorrhoids) or outside the anus (external haemorrhoids) beneath the skin. From time to time, about three out of four adults may have haemorrhoids. Haemorrhoids have a variety of causes, but the cause is often unknown. Most patients receive help from home care and behavioural improvements.
